17 Thais die intoxicated cause of a liquor consumed in Indonesia
At least 17 fishermen have died and numerous others have been hospitalized due to a dramatic case of poisoning by ingesting an alcoholic beverage.
A local newspaper article reported that nearly 200 Thai fishermen have landed in a province of eastern Indonesia, West Papua. They have gathered for a night of drinking.
Dr. Benyamin Simatupang who works in the emergency room at the hospital in the town of Merauke, said that victims drank an alcoholic beverage called Sopi, it is made from coconut oil, methyl alcohol of pork fat and other ingredients.
The first death occurred last Sunday and the number death toll has risen steadily since. More than 90 people remained in hospital on Thursday.
